Privacy-first DNS resolver built on European values

Our Mission

le_dns is an uncensored, privacy-first public DNS resolver designed with European values at its core. We believe:

• Privacy is a right, not a privilege - We pseudonymize IP addresses and never log your queries
• The internet should be open - No filtering, no censorship (except legal requirements)
• Infrastructure matters - Multi-provider strategy prevents vendor lock-in and single points of failure

Why Multiple Providers?

Unlike services that rely on a single cloud provider or use complex systems, we decided to start simple and we deliberately spread our infrastructure across multiple European providers:

Benefits of this approach:

• No vendor lock-in: Not dependent on any single provider’s infrastructure or policies
• Geographic diversity: Multiple locations across France and Germany
• Provider redundancy: If one provider has issues, others continue operating
• Better uptime: 99.5% target per server, 99.9% aggregate when using multiple resolvers

Infrastructure Philosophy

We reject black-box cloud services in favor of total control and data residency:

• Self-hosted: Docker-based infrastructure we control and operate
• No serverless magic: We know exactly where data lives and how it’s processed

GDPR-First Design

Privacy isn’t an afterthought - it’s built into our architecture:

• EU-only processing: All data stays within the European Union (France, Germany)
• IP pseudonymization: Truncated to /16 (IPv4) or /48 (IPv6) before logging
• Minimal retention: 7-day operational logs, 31-day aggregated metrics (no PII)
• No query logging: We don’t log which domains you resolve
• No third-party tracking: No analytics, no cookies, no external fonts/scripts

Note: We call it “pseudonymization” (not “anonymization”) to be legally accurate per GDPR Article 4(5)
