Terms of Service
Last updated: January 14, 2026
Welcome to le_dns!
By using our public DNS resolver service, you agree to these Terms of Service. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the service.
1. Service Description
le_dns provides a free, public recursive DNS resolver accessible via:
- Standard DNS: Port 53 (UDP/TCP)
- DNS-over-TLS (DoT): Port 853
- DNS-over-QUIC (DoQ): Port 8853
- DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH): Port 443, path
/dns-query
The service is provided on a best-effort basis with no SLA (Service Level Agreement). We aim for high availability but make no contractual guarantees.
Target Availability (Informational Only)
- Per server: 99.5% uptime target
- Aggregate (using multiple resolvers): 99.9% effective availability
Note: These are targets, not guarantees. Use multiple resolver IPs for better resilience.
2. Acceptable Use
You may use our resolver for legitimate DNS queries. You may NOT:
- Launch DDoS attacks or participate in amplification attacks
- Send malicious traffic (malware C2, spam relays, phishing infrastructure)
- Circumvent rate limits through IP rotation, proxies, or other means
- Attempt to exploit vulnerabilities or gain unauthorized access
- Use for illegal activities under French or EU law
- Run recursive open resolvers that forward queries to us (causes amplification)
⚠️ Abuse Warning: Violations may result in immediate IP blocking without notice. Serious abuse will be reported to ISPs and authorities.
3. Rate Limits
To ensure service quality and prevent abuse, we enforce the following rate limits per source IP address:
DNS Query Limits
- Burst limit: 1,000 queries per second (10-second window)
- Sustained limit: 500 queries per second (60-second window)
- Extreme abuse threshold: 2,000 QPS triggers 5-minute automatic block
NXDOMAIN Flood Protection
- NXDOMAIN queries: 500 queries per 10 seconds
- Exceeding this triggers a 1-minute block (stops random subdomain attacks)
Legitimate High-Volume Users
These limits are designed to accommodate legitimate high-traffic users (corporate NATs, ISP CGN). 500 QPS sustained = ~43 million queries/day per IP, which is sufficient for large organizations.
If you’re a legitimate user blocked by rate limits, contact abuse@ledns.eu with details.
4. Service Suspension & Blocking
We reserve the right to:
- Block IPs immediately without notice for abuse, attacks, or violations
- Suspend service during emergencies, maintenance, or legal requirements
- Modify or discontinue the service at any time
Unblocking Requests
If you believe your IP was blocked in error, email abuse@ledns.eu with:
- Your IP address
- Approximate time of blocking
- Description of your use case
We’ll review and respond within 48 hours (best effort).
5. No Warranty
The service is provided “AS IS” and “AS AVAILABLE” without warranties of any kind, either express or implied, including but not limited to:
- Warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose
- Guarantees of uptime, performance, or availability
- Accuracy or completeness of DNS query results
- Freedom from errors, bugs, or security vulnerabilities
6. Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, le_dns and its operator (Maiko BOSSUYT) shall NOT be liable for:
- Service interruptions, downtime, or degraded performance
- Data loss (though we don’t store user query data anyway)
- Incorrect DNS responses or routing decisions based on our responses
- Indirect, consequential, or incidental damages arising from service use
- Loss of profits, business, or revenue due to service unavailability
Use at Your Own Risk
You acknowledge that using a public DNS resolver carries inherent risks. You are solely responsible for:
- Configuring backup DNS resolvers
- Validating critical DNS responses (e.g., DNSSEC validation)
- Implementing appropriate fallback mechanisms
7. Privacy & Data Processing
Your privacy is important to us. Please review our Privacy Policy for details on:
- IP address truncation (pseudonymization)
- Data retention periods (7 days operational logs, 31 days metrics)
- GDPR rights and how to exercise them
8. No Filtering (With Legal Exceptions)
We are a net-neutral, uncensored DNS resolver. We do NOT:
- Filter adult content, gambling, or “objectionable” material
- Implement voluntary blocklists or parental controls
- Modify responses for advertising or tracking purposes
Legal Compliance
However, we may be required to implement Response Policy Zones (RPZ) for:
- Court-ordered domain blocks (e.g., copyright infringement, terrorism)
- French/EU legal obligations
As a non-ISP service, we are not subject to voluntary filtering requirements in France, but we comply with valid legal orders.
9. Service Modifications
We may change these Terms of Service, service features, or pricing at any time. Changes will be effective immediately upon posting to this page.
Continued use = acceptance: By continuing to use the service after changes, you accept the new terms.
10. Governing Law & Jurisdiction
These Terms are governed by French law.
Any disputes arising from or related to these Terms or the service shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the French courts, in accordance with French civil procedure rules.
11. Contact & Support
